This painting is part of a triptych of paintings called "Protectors of the Water." The title also references Indigenous Peoples' movements against pipelines violating sacred lands and polluting our waters:. #WaterIsLife #Mni Wiconi: Water Protectors. I started thinking more about the symbolism of water in African and diaspora cultures. I use pattern and repetition for water and spirit. My colors for this series ground the work in elements of water and earth: I am working with shades of Indigo, blues and ochre palettes. I am evoking a feminine water spirit of fertility, rebirth, healing, love, beauty, and regeneration.
