The President’s House: Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation. This commemorative site addresses the topic of slavery in the early history of the United States. It pays homage to nine documented enslaved persons (Austin, Christopher, Giles, Hercules, Joe, Moll, Oney Judge, Paris, and Richmond) of African descent who were part of the Washington household. I was commissioned to create a design for a wooden and glass memorial space. In working on this project, I aimed to create a setting enabling solemn reflection.The President's House memorial is a sacred threshold - a place where visitors step into the very footprint where enslaved Africans labored in service to the first U.S. President. The Trump administration replaced the original slavery and freedom exhibit at the President's House Site in Philadelphia with revised panels in July 2026, sparking a fierce legal and political battle with city officials
