Community portraits at the Logan Library. Free Library of Philadelphia, Commission for Logan Branch, Library Foundation, and Percent for Art,
This mural highlights literacy as a social change action for transformation and empowerment. Poet Trapeta B. Mayson, who grew up in North Philadelphia, inspires the work. Her family immigrated to Philadelphia from Liberia, a journey familiar to many Logan residents. When I heard her poem “Read,” I knew her message would unite my visual collage, so I wove elements of her poem throughout the mural. I used vibrant, warm colors like indigo, orange, gold, and graphic symbols. The word “Read” is translated into Arabic, Khmer, and Amharic. This community portrait mural resulted from months of research and is intended to make children and parents of Logan feel proud, hopeful, and included.
